Recent actions by provincial governments have shown that our universal healthcare system is under attack. Our nurses and doctors are exhausted, and wait times are getting longer. We must not only save our universal healthcare system but also expand it to include pharrmacare and head-to-toe healthcare.
Each of our Founders were proud of Canada's universal healthcare system.
But Tommy Douglas – the father of Canadian medicare – was especially proud. Tommy developed his passion for "free" healthcare as a young boy with osteomyelitis. Had it not been for a generous surgeon who operated on Tommy for free, he would have had to have his leg amputated.
“I felt that no boy should have to depend either for his leg or his life upon the ability of his parents to raise enough money to bring a first class surgeon to his bedside." – Tommy Douglas
Your contribution today will help the Douglas Coldwell Layton Foundation launch a nationwide campaign to educate and engage the public on this important issue while we continue to conduct essential prescriptive research that will play a key role in protecting and expanding our universal healthcare system. It will also help us facilitate more healthcare trainings – like this one, in Jack Layton's memory.
