David Lewis, a labour lawyer and national secretary of the Co-operative Commonwealth, was a visionary social democratic leader and a key architect of the formation of the New Democratic Party. He served as a member of Parliament and would become leader of the NDP in 1971 until 1975.
The Douglas Coldwell Layton Foundation is proud to have a longstanding relationship with the Woodsworth College at the University of Toronto where we provide funding for three social democratic scholarships: The David Lewis Memorial Prize in Canadian Politics, the Anne Marie Hill Scholarship to Advance Democracy, and the J.S. Woodsworth Memorial Foundation Scholarship.
